Dear Reader,

A few years ago, I woke up and found myself suddenly retired. I was now in the land many working people dream of. Retirement land.
I didn’t count my blessings. I had never been there before. I didn’t know what to expect. I was not prepared.

In retirement land I started looking at other retired people. I had to try and work out what to do. How to win at this retirement game.  Who is doing well at retirement? Who is enjoying retirement? Why are they enjoying it?  What do I need in order to have a happy and productive retirement?

One thing I noticed was retired people varied. The happy ones were not the ones lounging by a pool with a martini in one hand. The happy ones were the ones who did thing for others. They volunteered. They drove for Meals on Wheels. They volunteered at the local Salvos. They looked after their grandchildren.

By helping others, they were giving meaning to their lives. They were useful, needed and valued. They were part of a win-win situation.
My definition of volunteering is not getting financially rewarded for doing work for others. I decided volunteering was the way to go.
At the same time, I started exploring Hobart and scribbling notes.

These ideas resulted in initially the Domain website and now the Hobart website. They exist. Up there in the clouds.  They are free. They are for anybody who clicks. There is no  scam. No goal of making money.

With these websites I did not aim to be politically correct or politically incorrect.  I hope they are correct. I hope they do not discriminant. They respect everybody. Irrespective of nationality, religion, ability, heritage, political views, sex or age.
I hope they facilitate everybody's  enjoyment of Hobart.

And this website is also for me. It gives my life meaning.

Regards Grandfather Alan
